The Village Information Centres (VICs) of South Indian Federation of Fishermen
Societies (SIFFS) are an initiative that is based on the maxim that information
is a pre-requisite and key to development.
The VICs of SIFFS stand out because they are the first of its kind targeted
mainly at fishing communities. The fishing communities are one of the most
marginalized communities; bereft of the fruits of the larger process of
development. The purpose of the VICs is to bring about development and
empowerment of fishing communities through providing a host of services from a
computer enabled environment.
The VICs would endeavour to provide information services along with commercial
services. Information services would also include aspects like awareness
building, training and capacity building. The commercial services of VICs are a
step directed at ensuring the self-sustainability of VICs in the long run.
